Social networks brought an unprecedented revolution in the way people communicate, interact, and socialize. The domain has influenced various aspects of the daily life from marketing to education. Students and educators alike form communities and collaborate through social networking platforms, being dedicated learning management systems, discussion forums, or other online social media generating platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. New generations are becoming more dependent on online social media content in their learning, and educators are starting to exploit social networks to enrich their teaching methods and techniques. In addition, social networks have already emerged as a subject studied by students in post-secondary institutions. This inaugural workshop aims at raising awareness of this emerging research field that bridges the gap between classical education and rapidly dominating social media and networking platforms. The objective is to bring together researchers and practitioners in the education and social network fields to develop a common ground and vision for modern learning methods. It aims at addressing all issues related to teaching and learning in the context of social networks as well as teaching social network topics. Both technical papers and nontechnical papers that describe case studies are welcome. We strongly encourage educators to submit up to two pages extended abstracts to share their vision, concerns and hopes. Paper topics include, but are not limited to:
  • The use of social networks to support teaching and learning
  • Mining and analysing teaching and learning online social media
  • Visualization of teaching and learning online social media
  • Student and educator communities
  • Assessment of social media content and participation
  • Teaching and integrating social networks in the education system
  • Studying the effect of social networks on students at different levels from KG to College.
  • Studying the reaction of parents and caregivers to social networks and social media
  • Studying the effect of family and kids networks on school readiness and performance
  • Forum based discussion and learning for students and educators
  • Pros and cons of social networks and social media on learning and education system
  • Methods for recovering the degrading interest in classical education among the youth
  • Better practices for youth to use social networks and social media
  • Social networks development course design
